We had a pretty big lunch but still wanted more than brats over the fire. We made a pizza pudgy pie one night after trying to decide what to have for dinner. We have made caramel apple pudgy pies that were a fun change to our normal traditional apple pudgy pie. ![]() Over the years we have tried multiple versions of “pudgy pies.” We have made traditional pudgy pies with cherry, apple and strawberry flavor. Dishes are easy as you typically only have silverware, plates and the cooking trays. It’s great, because a large portion of the time we already have a fire going and we can get everything together on a picnic table. Pudgy pies are a big hit in our family so we have become creative with them. We have honestly never used our camper oven and we’ve had a camper for about 15 years now. When we camp we like simple foods that hopefully don’t make a mess. We, as a family, do a lot of camping, so easy, quick and good tasting food is always at the top of our list. I covered the outside of the whole bread loaf with butter and covered it with garlic powder. Now here is where you take this to the next level. ![]() You can also fold it in half like a big pizza pocket or cut it into smaller rectangles and make multiple pizza pockets. So you want to keep it more like a loaf of bread. It’s hard to get the middle cooked and you’ll end up with raw dough. You don’t want to roll the pizza tight or have a lot of rolls. My mozzarella had gone bad so I used what I had available. I used a mix of yellow and white shredded cheeses but mozzarella is fine. Just remember that most toppings should be cooked beforehand, especially meats. Some other great additions could be sausage, mushrooms, olives, peppers, onions, etc. I kept it basic for the kids with just pepperoni. You can fill it with whatever pizza toppings you like. I used store-bought for this one because I was in a hurry. You can make your own pizza dough for this or use store-bought. I also made an Oreo dessert that just needed to be kept cold until serving. They had cheesy hashbrown casserole, green beans, bacon-wrapped asparagus, and chicken breasts pounded out to equal thickness and seasoned (all in aluminum pans) so they could plop everything down right on the fire. In fact, over the last weekend, my husband and his friends went camping so I prepared them some food before they left. I do a lot of taco meat, chili, pizza, casseroles, and side dishes like this. Recipes that I can just throw in the fire to heat up or cook and be done are my favorite. Even though we have the camper trailer now, I still just like to avoid the messes as much as possible. I love prepping food at home before we go camping. You can also make it at home in your oven. Campfire pizza bread is a super easy meal that you can prep before you leave to go camping.
